Subject: Looking for Storytellers to Interview

From: Linda Humes nabs@memberclicks-mail.net

Hi NABS Family,   I am currently working on my Ed.D in Executive Leadership. My dissertation topic is about African American storytelling as a vehicle for strengthening urban schools. I need tellers who have done ongoing in depth work with urban schools. Below, I have bullet the criteria for this study. If you or any of your colleagues are interested, please contact me.

My deadline for this inquiry is 7/24. This study is important for all of us who clearly know the value of the work that we do. At this point in our collective journeys as storytellers and keepers of the truth and culture, we must have more qualitative and quantitative data to expand the capacity of what we do and who we can serve.   There is increasingly more literature speaking to the importance of "narrative;, "storytelling" and applied storytelling" as integral components to corporate success, education and community building. Unfortunately the contribution of traditional African American storytelling and tellers are left out of these conversations. Our tradition informed all of these storytelling movements.

This work like the work of many of my colleagues brings us into the conversation!!  "In the Tradition..."We tell our story!   Criteria:   * 10-15 years experience as a professional teller * Worked in the same urban school for at least 3 years * Conducts performances, workshops with students, professional development workshops with teachers and parent workshops *Population - predominately African American/Latino, * K-12, It could be K-5, middle school or high school

* If selected, the interview process would not be extremely time consuming Also interested in speaking to any urban school administrators that use and integrate African American storytelling, culture, ritual throughout the school.

Thank you
Linda H Humes Ed.D Candidate St. John Fisher College Rochester NY yaffaarts7@gmail.com

A Season's Griot is public radio's only nationally syndicated Kwanzaa program. Hosted for the last 19 years by acclaimed storyteller Madafo Lloyd Wilson, this annual one-hour special captures tales and traditions of African-American and African peoples. This year’s program features our youth as the special guest griots, reading their own original and traditional stories.  Familiar and favorite elements of Griot will also be in place with plenty of music, and an original composition by the show’s poet laureate, Beverly Fields Burnette in this, the 2013 edition of A Season's Griot.

All questions and comments may be sent to Producer Mary Bradley, mary@whqr.org. This project receives support from The North Carolina Arts Council, a division of the Department of Cultural Resources, with funding from the The National Endowment for the Arts. A Season's Griot is produced by WHQR's Mary Bradley and distributed nationwide by Public Radio International.

Tate (Award-winning children's author) was inducted into the "Circle of Elders" at the 29th Annual National Black Storytelling (NABS) Festival on Friday, November 11, 2011. This honor occurred at the NABS Conference's annual Elders' Luncheon in Atlanta, GA. The Circle of Elders induction is bestowed on those selected nominees (persons age 60 and older from around the country) for their years of involvement and commitment to the African Oral Tradition, and for their contributions to the storytelling community.

The NC Association of Black Storytellers drove just one car in this annual  parade today.  Ella Joyce "E.J." Stewart, Willa Brigham and I were driven  by my daughter Teri Burnette. As we rode along, we jumped in and out of the car and gave out my "KC Takes A Stand" (drug prevention) coloring book to kids along the parade route. We probably gave away 300 books. Hats OFF to the NCABS "Storyteller ladies" who "jogged" beside (and hopped in and out of)  my car

Greetings EJ, "Pattie Cake", Renee, Jackie, Roy, Baba Jamal, Pinkie, Bennie, Teri  Eleanora, Amani and other NCABS members who were present at the Museum's AACC--

This is simply to say a huge THANK YOU so VERY much for the tremendous contributions that each of you made yesterday, as you entertained, informed and challenged our audience at the NCMH's 11th Annual African American Celebration.  Each one was stellar in your presentation, and NCABS is so fortunate that you traveled, shared your abilities in your own unique way, and, of course, inspired "the thinking" and "the doing" of others who heard and saw us! Thank you again for being there with/for NCABS!
